We loved our stay here. Apartment is basic but clean and cosy, and a few minutes walk from the centre of Lerwick and the ferry terminal. Our ferry arrived early in the morning and the host accommodated an early check-in for us and was very quick to respond to our message. Good value for money and would recommend.

The room was clean and 'adequate' and the hotel is in a nice area of Edinburgh near two lovely art galleries and Dean Village. We didn't try the breakfast, preferring to try a local cafe instead.

Despite booking well ahead, we arrived late in the day and they had to find us a room which was in the basement with no windows and natural light. The staff apologised and I was charged £40 less than the booking price because of the inconvenience. The room was adequate and clean enough but very cramped and needed lots of small repairs, eg towel rails were missing or damaged. It wasn''t cleaned during the day, nor were supplies of tea, coffee, etc replenished - I had to go to reception to request more. Also, when we arrived there was a strong smell of smoke in the rather shabby reception area due to smokers immediately outside the open door into the building. The open 'restaurant' area was immediately behind reception with TV screens, a bar and high stools to sit on. We chose to not pay the rather expensive cost of breakfast and instead found a lovely local cafe nearby. Overall a very disappointing experience.

The hotel is beautifully situated on the river and just a short stroll into the centre of Kendal or a brisk walk up the castle. The room was comfortable.

Dogs!!!! After settling in to my room, I realised that there were dogs in rooms either side of me which barked continuously. The staff were very helpful in finding me another room - but I then had to repack etc. Even on the 3rd floor I could still hear the dogs barking, albeit not as loudly. I ate in the restaurant, which was good value but average food.

Over priced, definitely NOT five star, the room was dirty, marked walls, marked ceiling, filthy shower cubicle, cubicle so small you had to step out to turn round, dated furnishings, drab decor, lift not working, poor quality and poorly prepared foods
