We avoided spending much time in Edinburgh when we learned there was a huge festival going on. We flew in for a nearby walking trip. Once there we could see that it is a beautiful city with lots of history and excellent public transportation. The tram is easy to use. I felt like I barely touched the surface of Edinburgh in my three days here! The city is easy to walk through, and had an excellent tourism infrastructure. It is beautiful because it has all these old buildings but is surrounded by nature and there are lots of parks! I liked waking up Calton hill, which has an excellent view of the city and lovely purple thistles growing on top. There were a lot of free excellent museums and I didn't even get around to visiting them all, including an art gallery with impressionist paintings (The National Gallery). The Royal Mile is where most tourists go, but it is kind of funny because there are a million souviner shops lining the road! If you want to buy something plaid, or a hairy coo stuffie, there is where to go! Mary's Milk Bar makes really good gelato and there is always a super long line up. One of my favorite places to find a gifts to bring back to your family is a shop on candle maker way that sells lovely things designed by local artists! I bought a tea towel with a cute map of Scotland on it there. I could have spent a few more days there, I should go back. Edinburgh is a great city with lots to do, we took a bus tour to Lochness which was such a beautiful place. We stayed for 4 nights which was just enough time to fit in everything we wanted to do. Easy access off the bypass and lots of parking although it had doubled to £8 since our last visit. Don’t be put off by the hotels distance from the city centre. There is a tram spot about 100 meters away which takes about 10 minutes to get into the centre of Edinburgh which is excellent.
