British Museum

As Great Britain’s Empire expanded, so did its cache of material treasures – many of which are on display in this world-class museum. Among its eight million exhibits, you'll find the stunning Elgin Marbles from Greece, the Benin Bronzes and the legendary Rosetta Stone. The Reading Room stands at its heart and is spectacular in size and scope.

Do not go to this museum thinking you will see everything. Even with close to four hours, we barely scratched the surface--but what you do see is incredible and that means there's always more for a future visit!

We were overwhelmed by the number of noisy visitors first thing in the morning. It was not a warm day but it was very stuffy and there was no air flow through a lot of the galleries. The information tags on some of the exhibits were poorly placed and very difficult to read unless you were right up close.

Pre-book a ticket or go on a late opening evening ( The queues can be very long). The Egyptian /Assyrian statues and monuments are spectacular ,asare the controversial Elgin marbles. For intrinsic British exhibits, Roman Britain is fascinating. The reading room is hosting an exhibition at the moment. A very interesting space set in The Great Court. Top tip _ don't try to see everything in one visit. Plan and Prioritize!! Top Tip:

Too crowded to really see the exhibits.

Too crowded to really see the exhibits. We booked a slot which I thought was to stagger the influx of people but clearly not. The British museum is world class when it's not too busy. Bring your own food and drinks ,come as early in the day as possible. Try to go to toilets outside of the museum as you could be stuck in a very long queue. There are free lockers for bags etc but again come early as these fill up very quickly, the alternative is the cloakroom which is expensive to leave coats/bags etc.

It's free, but book an entry time in advance, and be prepared to join a long queue, so arrive well before your time slot. We only had one day, so picked an area or two each. I would love to have a whole week to go every day (and book for every day). Stunning to see in reality items you're familiar with from books! Another tick off the bucket list. You can buy some food there, but there's little choice, so it might be easier to take a packed lunch. Wear easy shoes as there aren't many places to sit down. Leave some time for the bookshops -- both the serious one and the touristy one.

Great location next to many university buildings and the British museum. Short walking distance to several underground stations (Euston Square, Goodge Street, Russell Square). Very good cooked breakfast, but no fresh fruit. The breakfast room does not have many tables, so theoretically if they are all taken you have to wait (never happened to me).

The location was great - close to British Museum and other attractions, a lot of good restaurants around, Chinatown not too far off. The area is nice and quiet. The flat itself was simply but tastefully decorated and very clean. The kitchen had all basic amenities.

Excellent location with Metro stop, market, bank right across the street. The place was tastefully decorated and very clean. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you need and a very nice Nespresso coffee machine which was a plus. The staff super responsive within few minutes. Very well organized. The instructions very clear for checking in and checking out. Again location was fantastic with minutes walk to Covent Garden and British museum and Metro. I would definitely stay here again.

We really liked the location right by the British Museum and near the Tottenham Court Road tube station. There were lots of restaurants within walking distance in the west end. The hotel was very clean and comfortable. They offered free water, candy and shortbread cookies near the front desk for snacks. The breakfast was delicious, with a wide variety offered, including many nutritious options that were great. The staff was kind and very helpful whenever we had a question or needed advice. We would definitely stay here again.

The location of this hostel is excellent — just about an 8-minute walk from the metro and surrounded by plenty of restaurants. You can even walk to the British Museum and other central London attractions if you enjoy walking. The place is clean and quiet. We were allowed to leave our suitcases until 4 PM on the day we had to check out.
