Lovely cottage in a beautiful location. A real home from home. John kindly upgraded us to the bigger cottage (The Loft) at no extra cost. Fully equipped, including dishwasher and washing machine (not that we used them.) Lovely powerful shower Local bus service to Durham/Newcastle less than 5 minute walk away. Ideal for visiting Durham, Beamish Museum (a must!) and surrounding area. Addition of coat hooks in hall and a lamp in the lounge would be great. Local pub (over the road serves lovely meals) and the Chinese restaurant- Wok (10 minutes walk) is brilliant

The pub gave a warm and welcoming feel on entry and was clean and tidy and the fairy lights and candles were a very nice touch. The bar staff gave an excellent service and were very friendly. The breakfast was nicely cooked and well presented, and again the staff were excellent.

The toilet hadn't been cleaned adequately and had stains on the upper part of the bowl. The sink taps looked to have toothpast splashes on. Both these gave an overall feeling of uncleanliness. The tv remote needed a good clean. Although the bed was a king size, it had two 3ft mattresses rather than 1 mattress. There were only 2 milk sachets provided yet 6 tea/coffee packets. Breakfast could have included cereal and toast.

We went in the Easter holidays and the village was basically shut.

Beautiful surroundings but inside left much to be desired. Great location for getting to Whitby by train.

Dusty and gloomy. Carpets and curtains definitely need cleaning. Coffee machine was a pain to operate. No kettle. Shower was next to useless. Cold draft through the night through the window. But the worse thing of all is the damn noisy cockerels that decide to make a continual loud noise at 4 am!!!! Gave up trying to get any sleep after 5 am. Won’t be going back.

Actually I am regular customer for this hotel, but this time really gave me a bad experience. I stay 6 nights this time and the third day early morning around 6:08am fire happen, how many ppl got this type of experience before? Three fire engines is here. Although I understand this is the uncontrollable situation by the hotel but the worse things is after that no any staff or management come to us to explain and feel sorry about that not even say any refund or action due to this incident. Just like nothing happen before.
