San Gimignano, with the Italian sun glistening intently on its 14 remaining towers, cuts a dramatic figure from its position high on a Tuscan hill overlooking vineyards. However, it is when you get up-close-and-personal with this medieval-walled city and crane your neck to the blue sky that you truly appreciate its mesmerising beauty.
If you take away the swarming summer tourists circling the piazzas of San Gimignano, then this city offers you a wonderful trip back in time. The main square, Piazza della Cisterna, is surrounded by Romanesque buildings and Piazza del Duomo features Torre Grossa, the city’s tallest tower.

Loved San GIMIGNAANO, after trying to get their with parking for a few days we learnt go 9am so you can park your car and actually move inside..It is truely beautiful.great coffee shops as well, well worth a visit
The old town was quaint with lots of food stores where we were able to buy what we needed to create a delicious meal for 13 people. Lots of restaurants and local specialty stores too including wines and chocolates.
We spent 1 full day and 2 - 1/2 days. It’s great for one night. Lovely and fun. Extremely touristy with not the best history. I think people go here bc it’s closest to Florence. But the hordes of crowds is a disaster and a menace. Go off season and if you’re going during the peak, go in the evening. Our trip was amazing bc we also booked a wine tasting at a vineyard that looked onto the old town. And a cooking class with a local home chef. Overall the experience was great! But mostly bc of the other experiences
San Gimignano is a beautiful ancient city. I had planned to visit other nearby Tuscan towns during my two week stay. But this was impossible. Unless you have your own car and are brave enough to negotiate with Italian drivers exploring is difficult and time consuming. Public transport is limited and takes ages to reach short distances. I only managed to get a driver on one day and was charged 50 euro for a 9 kilometre trip to nearby village. There were daily bus loads of tourists that flooded the city crowding the streets and cafes in rotating two hour blocks. One great thing … the street musicians who performed throughout the day.
Small enough to be easy to navigate but big enough to have things to see. Gorgeous walled city with winding alleys and stone buildings. Ate a fantastic dinner at La Mandragola-- beautiful setting and fantastic food.
San Gimignano is a well maintained mid evil town. It was extremely clean. There was a variety of foods and wines to enjoy, which were all reasonably priced. The view from the top of the tower, gave a panoramic view of the area and could even see the church tower at Fattoria San Donato Winery, where we stayed for 3 nights. There was free entertainment to enjoy as meandering the streets.
