If you take away the swarming summer tourists circling the piazzas of San Gimignano, then this city offers you a wonderful trip back in time. The main square, Piazza della Cisterna, is surrounded by Romanesque buildings and Piazza del Duomo features Torre Grossa, the city’s tallest tower.
San Gimignano, originally an Entruscan village, was part of the ancient pilgrim route Via Francigena joining France to Rome. Its name was derived from the Bishop of Modena and is well known today as the Town of Fine Towers.
The 12th-century Collegiate Church of San Gimignano is a worth a visit with its wonderful collection of frescoes, and it also includes the Religious Art Museum.

San Gimignano is a beautiful hill town with stunning views, charming medieval streets, great restaurants, and plenty of gelato shops. We enjoyed exploring on foot, dining in the historic center, and taking in the atmosphere. Getting around is easy once you park outside the walls, and families will enjoy walking the towers, visiting the piazzas, and sampling the local gelato. A must-visit while in Tuscany!

There is nothing negative I can say about San Gimignano.
There is nothing negative I can say about San Gimignano. The atmosphere, history, food, and certainly the people were perfect! I explored most of the inner city. The local wine is spectacular! The wine experience was a favorite, and also my friend took a 3 hr. wine tour, which she loved. The Hotel, Terra Ombra, was beyond what I imagined. Lorenzo and Matilde were such gracious hosts. An inspiration for all! Just 24-year-old high school friends who saw a vision and followed it. If this is only the first few years, I cannot imagine what the future will bring for them. Shoot for the stars; you are both amazing individuals.

This is a beautiful town with historic charm and an amazing peaceful feel.
Such a great place to visit, definitely stay within the town as opposed to a day visit and experience the amazing restaurants available. It is equally as charming at night as in the day time.
We recommend the following;
Fuoroliogo for great pasta, Le Vecchie Mura for unforgettable views and accompanied by equally amazing food like rabbit and wild boar, Il Ceppo Toscano for the best tartare and steaks we have ever had and Forno Boboli for traditional breakfast - freshly baked and filled focaccia!
Locally produced wines were all delicious and really well priced, many of them DOCG standard.

Staying in San Gimignano is a wonderful experience.
Staying in San Gimignano is a wonderful experience. Expect busy streets during the day with tourists, but by the evening, they have disappeared and you have the amazing sunsets, evening strolls around the ancient streets, and wonderful bars and restaurants. Early morning sunrises are worth getting up for too. Best restaurant for us is the Vecchia Mura - phone ahead to reserve a table. Worth taking a walk up to the Rocca which has exceptional views from the top (and sunsets). We also hired a couple of mountain bikes and did a fabulous 30km self-guided route around the surrounding countryside with wine tasting half way! (GetYourguide app)
We flew into Pisa and hired a car (go small as roads can be narrow), and its about 1hr 10 drive to San Gim. There are parking areas around ranging from 10 - 15 euros a day.

Characterful little town, great restaurants and take aways (get a pizza slice from RiccaPizza or a sandwich from CECCA). Some amazing views (watch the sunset from the tables outside Divinorum wine bar or dulcisinfundo restaurant). Parking inexpensive, but very busy!

San Gimignano is an historic, cultural and architectural attraction all of its own capturing the attention of lovers of medieval and Renaissance period history, especially the Medici, Guelph, Ghibelline and Gherardini families and the continuous contest for control of Tuscany. But it also serves as a terrific base from which you can visit Florence, Siena, surrounding hills, valleys, vineyards and historic towns and villages, including:-
• Castel di San Gimignano, a small village perched on a hill with commanding views;
• Colle val D’Elsa, a larger medieval city stretched out along the ridgeline of steep hills;
• Monteriggioni, a small walled village with defensive towers;
• Casole D’Elsa, which was interesting;
• Castellina in Chianti; and
• the Chianti and the Val d'Elsa areas, all very beautiful.
You can also enjoy wine tasting at the nearby Chianti vineyards.

The location is fantastic. Care has been taken to present this family run hotel with typical Tuscan features but also boasting all the comforts and luxury that make a stay enjoyable. It is set in parklike, peaceful gardens, the pools are a feature, it is surrounded by magnificent views and is within walking distance of San Gimignano. The breakfast is sumptuous. All members of the hotel team were extremely friendly and helpful. This was a return visit and we look forward to more.

A terrific location, right in the heart of the walled town. We had a view of one of the famous towers from our window and it was a short walk to get anywhere you wished. Good eateries were nearby and a supermarket was at the other end of town. We walked to and from San Gimignano, and can recommend the hotel as a good stop for those travelling by foot along the Via Francingena or staying longer.

Lovely hotel just outside of San Gimignano. Nice large pool, good sized room with terrace. Beautiful pool area with good quality sunbeds. Parking is gravel and quite dusty but ok even for low riding sports cars. Loved the tea/coffee and prosecco at reception.

We absolutely loved this accommodation true Tuscan feel...in nature. It was the most relaxing part of our trip to Italy. They also make amazing wine. The pool was clean and so refreshing in this heat!
