British Museum

As Great Britain’s Empire expanded, so did its cache of material treasures – many of which are on display in this world-class museum. Among its eight million exhibits, you'll find the stunning Elgin Marbles from Greece, the Benin Bronzes and the legendary Rosetta Stone. The Reading Room stands at its heart and is spectacular in size and scope.

Do not go to this museum thinking you will see everything.

Do not go to this museum thinking you will see everything. Even with close to four hours, we barely scratched the surface--but what you do see is incredible and that means there's always more for a future visit!

We were overwhelmed by the number of noisy visitors first thing in the morning. It was not a warm day but it was very stuffy and there was no air flow through a lot of the galleries. The information tags on some of the exhibits were poorly placed and very difficult to read unless you were right up close.

Pre-book a ticket or go on a late opening evening ( The queues can be very long). The Egyptian /Assyrian statues and monuments are spectacular ,asare the controversial Elgin marbles. For intrinsic British exhibits, Roman Britain is fascinating. The reading room is hosting an exhibition at the moment. A very interesting space set in The Great Court. Top tip _ don't try to see everything in one visit. Plan and Prioritize!! Top Tip:

Too crowded to really see the exhibits.

Too crowded to really see the exhibits. We booked a slot which I thought was to stagger the influx of people but clearly not. The British museum is world class when it's not too busy. Bring your own food and drinks ,come as early in the day as possible. Try to go to toilets outside of the museum as you could be stuck in a very long queue. There are free lockers for bags etc but again come early as these fill up very quickly, the alternative is the cloakroom which is expensive to leave coats/bags etc.

It's free, but book an entry time in advance, and be prepared to join a long queue, so arrive well before your time slot. We only had one day, so picked an area or two each. I would love to have a whole week to go every day (and book for every day). Stunning to see in reality items you're familiar with from books! Another tick off the bucket list. You can buy some food there, but there's little choice, so it might be easier to take a packed lunch. Wear easy shoes as there aren't many places to sit down. Leave some time for the bookshops -- both the serious one and the touristy one.

The British Museum is a must see when visiting London.

The British Museum is a must see when visiting London. The building itself is spectacular and whats inside is even better. Big issue is the number of tour groups - not museum tour groups - external tour groups - everywhere! Crowding around all of the major exhibitions - taking up all the space and no regard for anyone else visiting the museum. Spent the entire time squeezing through these groups to glimpse an object. Would be great if there was a time set for no tour groups - but what can you do - its the British Museum!

Excellent location. Very Clean. Helpful and friendly staff. Comfortable beds. Nice bar & restaurant on site. Close to cafe's restaurants, public transportation and within walking distance to the British Museum (well worth the visit. No ticket? Go around to the back entrance; you'll get in even late in the day).

Clean, updated, accessible room, everything we needed for a 5 day stay in London. Close to a great coffee shop, a great local pub, and public transportation. Walkable to the west end, the globe, the British museum and the Tate modern. The location is quiet- across the street from Lincoln’s inn Fields- the largest square in London- so lots of green space nearby.

The location is very nice. A 5 min walk to the Russel Sq tube station. Less than that to the bus stop. Parks nearby. The British museum is within walking distance. Lots (lots!) of food options! It's well connected to the rest of London and the property was in a very nice neighborhood. They also had a laundry on the ground floor that was free to use.

Standard hotel in the heart of London. Clean rooms, clean linens, friendly staff, good wi-fi, housekeeping everyday, big breakfast spread every morning. The best part is the location in central London, just a few blocks from the British Museum -- all the big sights are a few miles in any direction and the hotel is between two tube stops, so it's easy to get around. One in our party needed a disability/ADA room and the staff was very accommodating-- from booking the room to helping us get the room set up when we got there.

Perfect location. Short walk to British Museum & National Gallery (15 minutes). We booked afternoon tea at the Ritz and Savoy ( convenient 15 minutes walk from the Hotel). Royal opera house 10 minutes away. The tube is 5-10 minutes walk. Theater district 5 minutes away. Taxi ride to Waterloo station 15 minutes in moderate traffic. We had fans in the room, were able to open a window. Temperature was perfect outside. Opened windows and a fan made stay comfortable. Not sure how air conditioning works during hot months.
