FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

If you just want to do Chester a weekend is fine to explore the walls, cathedral, shops and river. You need longer if going to the Zoo and exploring the surrounding area. We went to the WW2 Underground Bunker, the Zoo, Chester and Beeston Castle.

Chester is a delightful city with Roman origins.

Chester is a delightful city with Roman origins. We set out to walk the medieval walls and completed the circle in just over an hour. This afforded many interesting views. The Cathedral was definitely worth a visit. The "rows" (elevated walkways) in the central shopping area are an unusual feature, and the black and white architecture, so typical of Cheshire, was interesting. The City was also a good base for visiting North Wales, and also Jodrell Bank on the Cheshire plain.

Lovely city break, great choice of pubs, bars and restaurants. Lively and friendly atmosphere with fantastic shopping. Looking forward to returning soon. Recommend the slug and lettuce for 2-4-1 cocktails, miller and carter and porta tapas was absolutely amazing! A Wetherspoon's pub very close to hotel, Delamere Street underground car parking, locked overnight and a visit to Chester Boutique is a MUST

We visited Cheshire Oaks on our way down which was a great experience with plenty of shops and visited Chester Zoo on our second day didn't have time to go into Chester itself. Found Chester Zoo very disappointing with lots of empty paddocks and fields. Rather expensive day out to see empty enclosures.

Great location for Chester city centre and the car park, although busy, is a handy especially given its location. The hotel was well presented and all the staff friendly and helpful. Our room and the bed in particular was spacious and very comfortable. If we had been staying longer we would have made use of the swimming pool, fitness suite and spa...maybe next time.
