FAQs about hotels in Tokyo

See It to Believe It!

The capital of Japan, Tokyo is a vast, teeming metropolis nestled between mountains and Tokyo Bay. It’s so huge that you’ll have to come to grips with public transport and maybe even experience being pushed onto a train. Yes, it does actually happen!

Get your bearings by ascending the Tokyo World Trade Center near the waterfront, and savor the fantastic views taking in the red-and-white Tokyo Tower and Shinkuju’s skyscrapers. North is Ueno, home to the best museums (including the Tokyo National Museum) and a large park bursting with cherry blossom in spring.

Equally tranquil are the Chiyoda Imperial Palace and Gardens, surrounded by water. Also in gardens is the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya, a youthful district where neon abounds.

For more traditional Japanese culture, head to Asakusa whose Sensō-ji Buddhist temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. Outdoor markets sell a variety of wares, though shopping in Tokyo is, of course, fantastic wherever you go.

Whether you stay in a Japanese ryokan, luxury Tokyo hotel or a hostel, don’t fly out of Tokyo Narita Airport or Haneda Airport without having tried sushi. Another Japanese institution is the sento (public bath) and onsen (hot springs bath) – a must try. Also incredibly popular are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, Asia’s 2 most visited theme parks.

Japan is a fantastic vacation destination, a perfect blend of modern and traditional, and very safe. If you plan to see the main areas of interest, be ready for plenty of walking, easily 15 km a day. In Tokyo, 3 to 5 days is usually enough, as the city is well connected and you can cover most of the main areas in just a few days. Kyoto, however, deserves at least 4 to 5 days. The city is large, its attractions are spread out, and it’s worth taking the time to fully immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere. We also really enjoyed Hiroshima and Miyajima, wonderful, pleasant, and worth a 2–3 day stay, as well as the Hakone area, which is also worth spending 2–3 days exploring

Tokyo is massive with so many things to see and do.

Tokyo is massive with so many things to see and do. Even during the sweltering summer it is very doable thanks to the great transportation infrastructure, easy access to anything you could need, friendly people and vast assortment of sites, shops, dining and events. The historic shrines and temples are amazing as expected, Team Labs and other interactive experiences offered something unique and out of the heat for the family, the food and dining options are exquisite, and the people are all friendly. From a sumo training show to a day trip to Mt Fuji to just exploring Shibuya and Shinjuku we always had some fun and new experiences to look forward to. And as stated above, getting around is so easy. Might be the best public transport system I have ever seen from its connectivity to its safety and cleanliness. We went in summer with two kids and while a tiring trip, easily a remarkable trip. I would highly recommend a visit to Tokyo and Japan as a country if you have the time.

Tokyo is an incredible vacation destination.

Tokyo is an incredible vacation destination. Even in its more dangerous areas, it's safer than most places in the US. Most signs are in Roman letters making it easier to read for English-speaking travelers. Google maps and translate makes it really easy to way-find and communicate. The subway system is so much more advanced than anywhere in the US making it easy to travel short and long distances. The bullet train is more expensive than flying for domestic travel, but so much more convenient. The exchange rate, and tax-free purchasing makes it so much easier to bring back so many souvenirs. You can be as adventurous as you want when it comes to food. There's something for everyone as long as you're comfortable with noodles and rice as your base starch. It's worth trying as much seafood as possible as you won't find anywhere else with as much diversity or freshness.

Transpot was spot on, trains to everywhere, everything was clean and orderly everywhere, plenty of locations to visit, food was always affordable, fresh and tasty, people even though reserved are helpful to a fault. A must visit destination, with something for everyone to do, karts, museums, attractions, food, team labs planets and every style of food.

    A megapolis that is a must-visit.

A megapolis that is a must-visit. If you have the choice, you should avoid visiting during the summer months, as the weather conditions make moving around unpleasant. Tokyo has a very efficient transport system. Despite its huge size, it is easy to use as the signage is clear. The only thing that might be confusing is that there are different operators (Metro, JR, and private lines) for different lines. Tokyo is a safe, extremely clean, and vibrant city where you can combine sightseeing with a culinary experience (you must try street food!) and entertainment.

Absolutely loved this hotel in Akabane. Central location close to train station, shops and many bars and restaurants. The room was modern, a good size and included a small balcony with a view down the street. There was male and female onsen facility. Monday to Thursday there is a free afternoon tea 3-5pm including snacks, wine, juices, tea and coffee. There was also a free meal from 8pm. Breakfast was excellent - many choices. This is now our favourite hotel in Tokyo and is close to Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Rooms were large for Tokyo hotels and had a bathtub (we stayed in the South Wing), and housekeeping was good. It has two lines next to it including the less crowded Tochomae station on the Oedo line. Better than Shinjuku. There’s a decent Komeda’s cafe opposite the back entrance where we ate at twice and more eateries are about 5 minutes’ walk away. We liked that the limo bus stopped right at the hotel and that tour agencies picked up guests at the hotel too.

I actually liked the location as it's well located by the metro station and it's midway between Shibuya/Shinjuku to the west and Asakusa to the north east. The area around the hotel is quiet and corporate but if you walk around you will discover a fair few bars/restaurants about 10 minutes away. Rooms were spotless and had a Japanese style bath and coffee capsules were provided everyday. The rooftop onsen was a welcome touch
