FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

    York Minister certainly didn’t disappoint.

York Minister certainly didn’t disappoint. Some very interesting shops in The Shambles and lots of choices for cafes, bar and restaurants to suit various budgets. Viking museum was great too. The National Railway Museum was a ridiculously long walk but renovations are being done to the surrounding area so hopefully will be improvement in future. Sight seeing tour on open too bus very informative. It’s been fun and an education!

York is a compact city full of historical buildings and traditional dwellings. It really has the hustle and bustle of old village life. York offers a wide array of eating places, cafes restaurants and street food to suit every taste. If you love supporting local trade and enjoy browsing independent boutique shops in the hope of picking up something unique then look no further. It is wonderful to see such a thriving shopping experience. There are the usual tourist shops but there also some hidden gems. If you are looking to book attractions do this in advance as the most popular often sell out. Also be aware the attractions are fairly high priced. York is also the perfect anchor for visiting surrounding towns and villages of interest such as Scarborough, Whitby and Thirsk.

York is an historic city with so much to explore.

York is an historic city with so much to explore. There's a lot to see within a short distance as it's quite compact. We went to a couple of museums including the national railway museum, which is still free. The Yorvik centre is well worth a visit as it feels like you're actually going back in time. A river cruise along the Ouse is interesting and very relaxing. We've been to York a few times over the years and keep coming back because there's always something to discover.

York is a lively city with plenty of tourists. Taxis and buses are the best ways to get around. There are plenty of cafes and bars. Besides the wonderful Minster, there are many churches worth a visit. There are good quality shops to suit everybody. York is a delight. I went on a day trip by coach with The Mountain Goat Company. John was the driver and he kept us entertained and informed as we made our way to Whitby through the hills and valleys of North Yorkshire. It was a superb short break.
