The Minster Hotel, hotel in York

The Minster Hotel offers cooked breakfasts, free WiFi and elegant rooms.

Really enjoyed our stay, was presently surprised by just how nice it was. Bathroom was brand new with high spec fixtures and fittings, room was light and airy and tastefully decorated. We stayed in room 34 (small double) locations literally 5mins from the town. Above all the management seem to care and truly mean to keep and well kept establishment with a good reputation. The welcome letter welcomes feedback and the staff seem to be happy and in good spirits. Again this tells that the owners are good employers. Lately with many establishments I feel a trend to inconvenience the customer in favor of penny pinching even if the thing the establishment is withholding/limiting doesn't actually cost the hotel.. for example, here allowed us to check in early and park our car and even let us keep our car there up to 1pm on the day of checkout. Breakfast selection was generous and extensive and the time window wide to allow the customer to be up and off or lay in after a heavy night. Also the bars drinks were reasonably priced again showing the owners appreciate the customers as people and not just wallets. Sounds daft but little things like this stack up to give a happy experience.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

A walk around the walls. The railway museum was brilliant. The Treasurer's House (NT) was very interesting with a lovely cafe and garden. Both cafe and garden can be visited without paying the entrance fee. Evensong at the Minster was lovely and the interior as beautiful as the outside. York is a great place to amble around, nice shops, lots of good places to eat and drink. Second visit to Little Italy and the food was delicious. Interesting architecture.

City full of history and amazing stories of the past including the Jorvik vikings and ghosts 👻 There are lots of tours and all I’ve been on have been interesting and funny too. Absolute vast amount of places to eat and drink. Various street artists were in the city and were an absolute pleasure to watch. You will never be bored and will always leave wanting more. York is definitely my happy place and I already can’t wait to be back.

The peaceful Museum gardens; Bettys classy cafe; the Shambles and the Jorvik museum; the cathedral; All worth a visit. A word of caution - this old city centre is a mix of paving slabs, cobble streets and block paving with uneven placement which could cause you to trip. There are many places to eat and drink and there are also uber expensive jewellery shops as well as the usual everyday shopping areas. If you feel energetic walk along the remains of the old city walls for great views.

There is unfortunately not much to like about this Hotel other than its location which was a short walk to old part of York. We had an horrendous drive from Edinburgh to York and were really looking forward to checking into our hotel, having a nice relaxing bath and then going out for dinner - but our room (Superior Queen Room) did not have the bathtub we wanted. The breakfast buffet was nice - there was a good selection and the serving staff seemed friendly. Parking is available at the hotel but costs another 15 quid.

Locality great. Excellent base for the city centre. Short walking distance to the Shambles. Situated on a street full of bars, cafes and restaurants. Easy check in, simple instructions for gate and room codes. Friendly staff. On site parking. Warned about the narrow entrance for cars but we had no problem. Room Comfortable and clean. Aware of negative reviews but we weren't expecting the Ritz as it was considerably cheaper than other York hotels. We would definitely stay again.

The room was on the small side but perfect for one traveller. Convenient location so it was easy to walk to the centre of York and to the railway station from the hotel. I didn’t have breakfast or evening meal as I was meeting a friend who was on a day visit from Newcastle and so we dined in the city centre. The staff that I met were helpful. Best thing was the hotel's location...is five minutes from the train station, ten from the Shambles, YorkMinister and Old City. Rooms were sufficient size, with view of old architecture from them. Front reception staff were wonderful. Check-in and checkout were both quick. We were allowed to store luggage there for several hours on either side of our reservation.
