FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

York is lovely little city. It gets very busy during the day at all times of the year ( we visit regularly ) especially with coach tours. Fortunately, it gets quieter in the evening although still busy!!

Fabulous trip, the Minster is a must see and the guided tour funny and informative. The Shambles is quaint, take a walk along the Ouse. A walk around Clifford's Tower and see the sunset over the roof tops of York. Visit the Museum Gardens - all are lovely, with fabulous cafe's , pubs and bars to rest and decide on the next place to see. A great place to visit with friends and family, with so many places to visit all steeped in history.

    The Shambles. The pubs.

The Shambles. The pubs. We had the best tea and scones we’ve ever had. Loved the history and buildings. Love the wall. Enjoyed the Jorvik Viking centre. Found railway station very clean. Did not like seeing homeless/drug or alcohol affected people on very narrow sidewalks.

    Great city break. Beautiful place.

Great city break. Beautiful place. The cathedral is just amazing and the city around it is a beautiful place to walk and explore. So much history and lots of pedestrianised areas to walk around the quaint streets, shops and market. Didn't get to see the river or parks, which is a shame as we ran out of time.

My husband and I have just enjoyed a wonderful few days in York on our honeymoon and had the pleasure of staying the Du Vin Hotel. From start to finish our stay has been fabulous and genuinely the best hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff are all so professional and pleasant and can’t do enough for you. Everything you wish for in a hotel, you get here on a 5 star level. They did a lovely job of making our stay extra special for our honeymoon too 💕

Reception staff were very welcoming. We arrived early but our room was ready so we were all checked in by 2pm. Room was very nice, clean and spacious and the bed was very comfortable. Location was perfect and the hotel itself had a very nice feel about it. Exceptionally clean and well maintained and surprisingly quiet for a city centre location. I would definitely recommend a stay here to anyone wanting a great base for a visit to York.

Fantastic location in the centre of York literally next to the Minster and Shambles. Public parking nearby at Q-Park was great quality with a hefty discount code from the hotel. Room was spacious and well equipped, staff were super friendly and the breakfast was incredible. Can also recommend eating an evening meal at the Forest restaurant it was excellent and reasonably priced for a city centre too.
