- “This was my first time visiting Japan and have heard people recommend a ryokan+onsen experience, especially in Hakone. I'm so glad I did it here! I came with my mom and brother and we stayed in a Japanese style room and opted for the public onsen, which we used at night after dinner. There were probably only 5-6 women in there at the time, not crowded or busy. I wasn't expecting much, but the dinner and breakfast buffet were a pleasant experience, especially since we didn't feel like going out of our way to find a good food place in Hakone. It's an absolutely beautiful hotel as well and the people helping us at the front desk offer great service and spoke English well, which made our experience so easy. As a budget traveler, I was a little nervous to spend $350 for a night here, but it was worth the money and experience. (And of course, everything was clean, functional, etc. Just assume the bare minimums are easily covered).”

Owner made sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable. Owner took the time to ask about our plans and make sure we knew how to get where we wanted to go and made a good recommendation for a traditional polish meal within walking distance. We had a nice breakfast with a variety of options including yogurt, breads and spreads, scrambled eggs, meats, cheeses, vegetables and boiled eggs. Room was clean. Beds were comfortable. The Inn is charming. We were in the area to watch a bike race. We were able to walk to and from the gondola base.”

  The owner is a lovely woman who went out of her way to welcome us and settle us in after a long drive on a rainy day. We weren't able to have breakfast on two of the mornings because of schedules, but she brought a tray up to our suite so we could eat at our leisure, which we really appreciated. We were in the Maid's Quarters, which has a full kitchen, and we were able to buy groceries and prepare food to bring to a graduation party, which was really helpful. The sun porch is lovely, and overlooks an overflowing garden - great location to unwind at the end of the day or enjoy a morning coffee.

  The bed was small and uncomfortable - the futon on the porch was much more comfortable. It was also quite stuffy and the windows in the bedroom didn't open. The Victorian decor was NOT a selling point for us.

  The breakfast was okay — the waffles were very good. There were plenty of food choices. The property was modern, neat and clean. The location was great for our needs, and I appreciated the free and safe parking.

  I didn’t care for the hot food options on the breakfast bar. The first night, there was a light over the desk that would not turn off. The desk clerk came to the room but was not able to turn it off. We ended up taping a brochure over the light. We had no Internet in our room. The facility was comfortable but far from luxurious.

  AC worked even though there was a note asking you not to use it so they could save money

  The staff was rude and acted like I was inconveniencing them by asking to check in for my reservation while they were watching tv. The non smoking room smelled like stale cigarettes. The walls were paper thin meaning I could hear every bit of the loud speaker phone conversations happening in the rooms on both side of me. The door lock didn't work so I had to take all of my stuff out of the room when I went to get something to eat. The court yard is full of trash and junk.

  We were happy to get a ground apartment that was adjacent to the garden area patio. We didn’t realize the patio had a light that stayed on all night and the bedroom next to the patio did not have blackout curtains. The light from the patio kept our family awake.
