Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

We only had a short look around late afternoon on the day we arrived and then crabbed something to eat in one of the pubs. We only booked into the apartment for 2 nights as we were in the area for a family wedding and then going onto Whitby. We enjoyed what time
we were in York and will probably come back for a longer visit sometime in the future so that we can explore it in more detail.

Fantastic city - plenty of bars cafes and restaurants, and interesting independent shops. Wonderful medieval architecture and quirky pubs. York Minster is well worth a visit with the underground museum informative and genuinely interesting. Definitely recommend coming to visit away from the busy periods as I can imagine the City becomes difficult to navigate with so many extra visitors. The Star Inn The City was a great find with great food and a lovely terrace overlooking the river.

York is a fascinating city. So much history.
York is a fascinating city. So much history. So many places to explore. Ideally you would need 3 days at least for your first visit. You can walk most places so could do. Whistle stop.
Please visit the railway museum. It’s free entry. Pre book your visit online for a slot.
The minster is worth a visit as is the York museum
Plenty of lovely cafes and restaurants. Bettys is our favourite. Pricey but nicey.
The location was very good. There was plenty of transportation. The city buses and the tour buses had stops close by. And the main part of town was within walkable distance. I had to pay extra for breakfast and it was a little expensive but it was readily available and tasty with choices. The room was cozy and comfortable. The shower was one of the best I experienced over my five weeks of England travel. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Location was really great, very central and near to the main sights of York City centre. Breakfast was good. Liked the variety and option for a hot breakfast too. I would have preferred it starting slightly earlier but I appreciate most don't get up early at the weekend. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating so that is a real plus. Makes a massive difference to your perception of a short hotel stay.
Great location, walking distance to everything. Very friendly staff especially Ian (concierge). Food was delicious and cocktails were the best. Housekeeping was very good. Would definitely recommend this hotel if you are visiting York. Make sure you book parking in advance (we booked the station parking with JustPark, drop cases first and a 5 min walk but cheaper than hotel) as limited spaces at the hotel
Room: Received an upgrade! Comfortable, clean and not noisy,

Great hotel which is perfectly located for getting around all the major attractions. Rooms are lovely and clean. Breakfast was excellent and very good value. What really makes this hotel is the Staff each and every one of them were friendly and helpful and next time we return to York we will definitely stay there again.
The staff went above and beyond for me. I've got health conditions and they let me in my room early when I explained and they really looked out for me. They're a credit to the business. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone and I'll definitely use this hotel if I'm back in York. The room was really nice too and comfortable.
It's a pretty new hotel and is very clean, and in a great location, particularly if you're travelling by train. Near the city walls, and easy to get around on foot to the major places of interest in York. Breakfast good, but very busy between 9 and 10 AM. Our room was very quiet, but we asked for one away from the lifts.
Helpful and friendly staff, comfortable bed, nicely decorated room, generous breakfast with lots of choice, electric car charging facilities. There is a pub nearby (The Plough) serving excellent food at reasonable prices. You can easily walk into York city centre from the hotel within 30 minutes along the river.
Very nice hotel living up to it's name. The room was spacious, clean and well appointed with a view overlooking the city wall. Easy walking distance to/from the train station and to the York Minster and York city center. Close access to walk the city wall. Not far from many restaurants.
The Churchill Hotel is very comfortable, very central a few minutes walk into York City centre, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the bunker rooms are brilliant, fun, romantic, the food was lovely too. A perfect place to stay when in York.
As aways, the room was spotless and had everything that we required.
The bed was very comfortable and the black-out curtains ensured a good nights sleep.
The hotel is ideally situated for functions at the York Barbican and Picadilly
This may have been the cutest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in! Large room with four poster bed. Perfect location across from York Minster. Bed was comfy. Bathroom was spotlessly clean and modern.
Room was just what we needed after a long drive and local visit. Explored locally in the evening appreciating the hotel's proximity to York city centre and all it's attractions.
Great location for travel to York. The hotel has generally been refurbished well. My room was small but well-laid out. The very busy and over-worked staff were polite and charming
Lovely room and nice building. Amazing quality breakfast.
Good location, 15 minute walk into city centre.
One of the few hotels in York with parking (£10.00 per 24 hours).
City Centre close to hotel.valet parking beneath hotel is a little cheaper than the carpark opposite. Parking is a problem in York.
Had a room overlooking Clifford's Tower.
The staff were so friendly and helpful. The hotel is in an excellent location to visit York and we thought our 'Churchill bunker'
themed room was so interesting.
Perfect hotel for a few nights away in York. Near the city centre and shops. Comfortable, clean room. I would highly recommend staying here. Will be back
Great location with parking just a short stroll from the centre of York. Superb for a short break with the children as so much more space than a hotel.
