Spending 3 days alone in Nagano in late October - seeking advice on things to do or places to see

My husband will be hiking around Hakuba while I'm in Nagano by myself. Any advice on places to see or things to do in the city (or surrounding areas)? I won't have a car, but will be staying close to Nagano station.

Thanks!

You might like to visit Matsumoto. It is slightly under 1 hour's train ride from Nagano, famous for its beautiful castle.

If you have JR pass, you could go on a day trip to Kanazawa on a shinkansen. Try some seafood at the Omicho Market, and visit one of Japan's most beautiful landscape gardens called Kenrokuen.

If you will staying at Nagano, I recommend you join a one-day bus tour.

You don't have to worry about transfer and can go to famous places in Nagano.

Sinshu soba, chestnut, apple and etc are a well-known Nagano specialty. Please try it!

Nearby there is the jigokudani monkey park, a thermal spring where wild monkeys come every day to take baths. There is a bus that goes there, it's about 1h drive, a must to see.

Also Nagano has the first oldest Buddhist temple of Japan. Go for the sunrise celebration and then you can visit it for free with no tourists around.
